He wants to join: Spurs may sign a £40 million talent who earns 10 times less than Son.

The superb marksman might help Postecoglou’s team advance to the next phase.

It’s been just over a week since the Premier League season ended, and while Ange Postecoglou had his ups and downs, it’s certainly fair to say that his first season in command of Tottenham Hotspur was a success.

The Australian overcame numerous injuries and Harry Kane’s absence to guide the Lillywhites to Europa League qualification, so while he missed out on the Champions League, it wasn’t the worst of debut seasons.

However, with Manchester United and Chelsea expected to improve next year, Daniel Levy and Co must support their manager, and fortunately for them, a phenomenally gifted forward earning ten times less than Son Heung-min reportedly wants to join the club this summer.

Premier League star wants to sign for Tottenham.

According to a recent Tottenham Hotspur news article, the Lilywhites are looking for a new number nine, and thankfully for them, Brentford’s ace striker, Ivan Toney, “would jump at the chance” to join the North London club.

This news comes after months of speculation tying Postecoglou’s team to a variety of forwards, including the Englishman.

The story makes no mention of a potential price Levy and Co may have to pay, but prior reports have suggested that his original £100 million price tag may have dropped as low as £30 million to £40 million.

If accurate, this would be superb value for a player who was the Premier League’s third highest scorer last season, and it is a deal that Tottenham cannot afford to pass up.

How does Ivan Toney compare to Tottenham’s attackers?

So, when considering how the Englishman may potentially strengthen the North Londoners‘ offence next season, his statistics from this season are irrelevant.

Indeed, due to his eight-month betting-related football exile, he barely returned halfway through the season, and although scoring four goals and assisting twice in 17 games, he was clearly rusty.

As a result, it makes sense to utilise figures from 2022/23, as he was able to play a complete season for the Bees, scoring an astounding 21 goals in 35 games and adding five assists.

This output of 26 goal involvements in 35 games outperformed Richarlison’s seven in 35, Dejan Kulusevski’s 10 in 37, and even Son’s 20 in 47.

In fact, despite his disappointing return to football this season, the Brentford star has had a better previous two years combined than Richarlison and Kulusevski, who have 23 goal involvements in 66 games and 21 goal involvements in 76 games, respectively. Only the South Korean has improved his two-year production, thanks to a stellar effort this year.

it, while it’s evident that the former Peterborough “monster,” as manager Thomas Frank characterised him, would add more offensive threat to N17, he’d also do it for a reasonable salary.

In West London, he makes only £20,000 per week, which is about ten times less than Son’s weekly salary of £190,000.

This means that, while he would undoubtedly want and receive a greater salary at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, he will not be able to demand as much as the club’s other players, given his disappointing season and alleged desire to join the club.

Finally, with his fee dropping so substantially, his wages being quite reasonable, and a two-year return higher than the majority of Spurs’ current crop of attackers, signing Toney this summer should be a top priority.
