Reporter Charlie Eccleshare has revealed what he was informed regarding Ange Postecoglou’s reaction in the locker room following Tottenham Hotspur’s Tuesday performance against Manchester City.
Spurs fans are incredibly conflicted over their team defeating Manchester City, and it has been an odd few days for them.
On the one hand, Spurs would have had a chance to end the season in the top four with a victory. However, Arsenal would have been in a strong position to win the title if they had prevented Manchester City from winning.
When Erling Haaland scored the two goals to give Pep Guardiola’s team the three points, some Tottenham supporters were relieved.
Ange Postecoglou is unhappy with Tottenham’s players following Manchester City’s defeat.
Spurs, on the other hand, did not play like if they were trying to help Arsenal, with Stefan Ortega turning in a goalkeeping masterclass after replacing Ederson in the second half.
Nonetheless, it appears that Ange Postecoglou was dissatisfied with his team’s performance, as Eccleshare told The Athletic Football Podcast that the Tottenham manager did not hold back in condemning his players after the final whistle.
“Jack and I have both been told that he was very furious with the players after this game, despite the fact that he did not blame them publicly. And we saw in the Chelsea game, when they lost 2-0, that he was furious with some of the players, yelling at them to play the ball forward rather than backwards,” he continued.
“His thing is always he’s never going to call someone out for making a mistake, but he will call people out for not playing the way that he wants them to play, not taking chances, not being brave on the ball, not showing for the ball, not passing forward.”
All is part of the strategy.
To the untrained eye, it would be intriguing to learn what Postecoglou disliked about City’s performance; they certainly made things difficult for the champs.
Perhaps he believed Tottenham lacked the urgency he expected, which would have been easy to do in what appeared to be a somewhat dull atmosphere.
But you get the impression that Postecoglou is anxious to raise standards at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that he is unhappy with a home defeat, regardless of who it was against.
