Adams returned to the Premier League with Bournemouth after only one season at Elland Road.
Leeds United supported head coach Jesse Marsch with a slew of new players in the summer of 2022 after narrowly avoiding relegation from the Premier League that season.
Among those brought in at Elland Road were two Red Bull Salzburg players, Rasmus Kristensen and Brenden Aaronson, and the American also persuaded director of football Victor Orta to raid another ex-Marsch club, RB Leipzig, for Tyler Adams.
He joined United for a sum in the region of £20 million after playing 24 times in the German Bundesliga in 2021-22. He was an ever-present for Leeds under Marsch and was set to be under his replacement Javi Gracia.
However, the 24-year-old, who has 36 caps for the US national team, sustained a season-ending hamstring injury in March, meaning he missed the club’s final 12 games as they tried to avoid relegation to the Championship.
Leeds won only two of those 12 games and were relegated, but if Adams had been fit and available, the outcome may have been quite different.
It was not to be, and Adams’ final game for Leeds was a 2-2 draw with Brighton in March, when he was sold to AFC Bournemouth in a £20 million deal, with the Cherries triggering his release clause and securing a deal after he was strongly projected to join Chelsea instead.
Has Tyler Adams performed well since leaving Leeds United for Bournemouth?
Adams arrived at the Vitality Stadium in August having not played a game in over five months after undergoing surgery on his ailing hamstring, which included no pre-season.
Adams did made his long-awaited debut for Bournemouth in late September, coming off the bench for the final 20 minutes of an EFL Cup match against Stoke City in what was expected to be the first phase of his comeback.
During his cameo, however, his hamstring problem flared up again, with Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola confirming in early October that it was the same muscle that had previously been operated on.
“Tyler, we don’t expect him to be back with us anytime soon,” Iraola said.
“I believe the medical staff is assessing the situation.”
“They’re asking various specialists to take the best path we have.”
“We haven’t made a decision yet.”
But, whatever solution he or we choose, we don’t expect to see him on the pitch anytime soon. The hamstring is the same.”
When will Tyler Adams make his comeback?
Unfortunately for Bournemouth supporters, Adams will not be seen again until at least late January 2024.
Following Iraola‘s statements about another possible procedure, Adams underwent surgery in October, with a recovery time of three to four months.
That is a cruel blow not just to Adams, but also to Bournemouth, their fans, and owner Bill Foley.
Despite the fact that Adams had surgery earlier this year, Foley approved the big-money trade, but no one could have predicted this setback.
Bournemouth have also needed some more midfield strength in the first few months of the season, and if Adams had been fit, they might not have been dominated in so many games.
Adams will almost certainly recover from the terrible hamstring problems he’s been dealing with since March, but for the time being, he’ll have to watch from distance.
