How Jaden Philogene, a Spurs target, compares to Son, Kulusevski, and Johnson

Following reports that Hull City was linked to Jaden Philogene, we compare the player to c’s wingers.

Hull City has made a fantastic start to the season, and Liam Rosenior‘s team is a strong contender for Premier League promotion.

The Tigers have worked incredibly hard as a squad to get to this point, but Jaden Philogene has been a particularly good player for Rosenior.

Being one of the greatest players in the Championship, the summer acquisition from Aston Villa has drawn a lot of transfer attention.

Spurs are interested in Jaden Philogene.

According to recent rumours, Spurs are reportedly making their strongest effort for the 22-year-old as they contemplate pursuing Philogene during the summer transfer window.

Although Ange Postecoglou already has a number of excellent wide options at his disposal, the England U21 international would provide them with even more talent and depth in a position that is extremely important to the Australian manager.

Additionally, Philogene‘s ability to play down both flanks adds to his attractiveness, and at his age, he still has room to improve.

Examining Philogene‘s numbers in more detail makes it clear why the Spurs are keeping an eye on him and believe he has star potential.

Naturally, one must consider that he is playing in the Championship, which is a significant step up from the Premier League, and all of the statistics must be interpreted accordingly.

Nonetheless, Philogene is a dynamic athlete who has every indication of being able to take that step forward.

First and foremost, his eight goals and six assists is an outstanding return, and it will be the standard by which all offensive players are finally evaluated.

Jaden Philogene

The only player who outperforms Philogene in terms of goals is Son Heung-Min, a South Korean with an equal amount of assists.

Philogene is now outperforming expectations with an xG of 5.8 and projected assists of 4.6, but those stats are still rather high, indicating his ability to arrive in the correct places, which Postecoglou need.

The defensive contributions of Jaden Philogene
The most telling indication that Philogene might be a Postecoglou player is probably his front-runner defence and pressing skills.

FBref notes that only the Sweden international has made as many tackles as he has this season—47—more than Son (14), Johnson (19), and Kulusevski (40).

Out of those 47, Philogene has completed 11 tackles in the last three quarters; Kulusevski has one less than that total.

As a result, it’s reasonable to assume that the Hull player could adjust to Spurs’ relentless pressing style, which Rosenior does his best to somewhat imitate.

Jaden Philogene will fit nicely with Spurs’ offensive scheme.

Spurs‘ play is also characterised by its breadth, which calls for wingers with quickness and ability to beat a man during transitions.

In the current campaign, Philogene has carried the ball 729 times, more than both Son and Johnson combined. Kulusevski has carried the ball the most, with 807.

The Hull midfielder has demonstrated his individual talent, which is crucial to his game, by completing 118 more takeaways than the three Spurs players combined.

In the end, Philogene has been outstanding for Hull this year, so it should come as no surprise that teams in the top flight are keeping an eye on him.

Although some may have thought that Philogene’s move to the Spurs would be premature given his current career stage, the numbers indicate that he may have the all-around skill to succeed under Postecoglou.
