To avoid wasting a year of his playing career, Todd Cantwell has maintained that he had to leave Rangers.
Eventually, the 26-year-old midfielder left the Ibrox club in the summer to join English Championship team Blackburn Rovers.
Reflecting on his summer departure from Glasgow, Cantwell said he feels “unlucky” to have had a few bad club exit experiences.
But citing the significance of happiness for football players, the creative midfielder revealed that he felt he had to move on or risk losing a year of his career.
Cantwell believes he “thrived in the environment” of Scottish football, even though he didn’t think he was in the appropriate environment once “circumstances changed” and “different people were in charge.” He felt he had to leave due to this.
“It’s probably rare for me to have a few of those moments in my career so far,” Cantwell told BBC Radio Lancashire.
“It was a little unfortunate.
Situations and other things have followed me around. For example, sometimes I haven’t agreed with the tactical side of things, or I’ve had a good relationship with the manager and they’ve left.
