Tottenham Hotspur are top of the Premier League table after six wins in eight games, with Arsenal level on points but trailing Spurs on goals scored.
Arsenal veteran Ian Wright has given his opinion on Tottenham Hotspur’s chances of winning the Premier League title. The two north London clubs are at the top of the standings coming into the October international break, each with 20 points from a possible 24, with Spurs with one goal more than Arsenal.
Postecoglou‘s side began match week seven with a 1-0 victory against Luton Town, and Arsenal finished the weekend with a 1-0 triumph over Manchester City. While the Gunners’ victory seems to be significantly greater on paper, Tottenham were forced to beat the Hatters in the second half with 10 men after Yves Bissouma was sent off shortly before the break.
Thankfully, an early Micky van de Ven goal saved Bissouma‘s blushes, as Spurs went on to defend for the next 40 minutes after the Dutch international’s first goal for the club. Postecoglou, understandably, lauded van de Ven after the game, although he looked more delighted by his defensive partner Cristian Romero’s performance.
“They’ve been great all year, both of them, the whole back four and Vic [Guglielmo Vicario],” he conceded after the game. “I think a big part of that is Romero because, when you look at it, it’s Destiny‘s first year in the Premier League, Micky‘s first year, Vic’s first year, and Porro is just starting his Premier League career, but they’ve got a World Cup winner beside them and I think he makes them feel like they belong.” They are really comfortable with him at their sides, and you can see them bloom.
“Micky was amazing today in dealing with it. We anticipated we’d have to cope with a lot of long balls and aggression here against Luton, but you know Micky has fantastic physical qualities, but he’s also evolving and learning as a player.”
Postecoglou will be pleased with another clean sheet and three points, and despite the fact that it is early in the season, Spurs have every right to be there and consider themselves in the Premier League title battle. On Match of the Day, a statistic indicated that on 11 occasions, teams with 20+ points after eight games went on to win the championship.
