Liverpool must decide who will lead the club next season once Jurgen Klopp leaves, as well as who will serve as the club’s sporting director.
There have been various options, but the greatest one on paper is clearly an old name.
Since the beginning of this week, there have been rumours that Michael Edwards could return to Liverpool. He is by far and away the best contender for the position. Given his track record and knowledge with Liverpool, he will be able to establish the continuity that he need.
He also has a track record of making good recruitment judgements. Edwards is without a doubt the best sporting director in the business. Liverpool should bring him back. It could be the best decision FSG has made in years
Gary O’Neill could be Michael Edwards‘ Liverpool contender.
The man in question is, of course, Gary O’Neil, who has done an excellent job for Wolverhampton this season. He just led the club to the FA Cup quarterfinals. He is also one point away from a European position in the Premier League, ahead of both Chelsea and Newcastle United.
O’Neill previously worked as a coach at Liverpool. According to The Telegraph, O’Neil joined Liverpool based on Michael Edwards’ recommendation. They’ve been working together since 2003.
Edwards first met O’Neil while they were in Portsmouth. O’Neil was a player, whereas Edwards was an analyst. They bonded and have stayed close ever since.
Now, fast forward to the present. Given O’Neil’s recent track record, if Edwards returns to Liverpool, he cannot be ruled out as an option. Clearly, he has an excellent working connection with Edwards and has proven himself at the highest level in the Premier League.
