Tom Huddlestone has lavished admiration on former Tottenham Hotspur teammate Luka Modric.
Spurs have had some amazing players throughout the years. Gareth Bale comes to mind instantly, as does Harry Kane. Modric is also right up there, and he was reportedly fantastic in training back then.
Tom Huddlestone claims Luka Modric was ‘amazing’ in Tottenham training.
Tottenham signed Luka Modric from Dinamo Zagreb in 2008 for more over £15 million (Sky Sports).
The Croatian was highly regarded at the time, but there were questions about his physicality and how he would adjust to the intensity of English football.
However, throughout his time at Spurs, Modric established himself as one of the top midfielders in the Premier League before moving to Real Madrid for £30 million in 2012 (BBC).
Tom Huddlestone was at Tottenham when Modric was signed, and he stated this week that the Croatian’s talent was clear from their first training session together. Aaron Lennon stated the same thing a while back.
On talkSPORT, Huddlestone said of Modric: “You look at him and think you can throw him off the ball or lads out-run him and stuff like that, but his first touch was exactly where he wanted every single time; he never used his left foot, but the outside of his right foot was ridiculous.
“I was present when he arrived. Some of the things he was doing in training were remarkable, but then, as is probably the usual British method, ‘he’s only tiny, so we’ll throw him on the left wing or play him as a number 10’, which is not too far out of his comfort zone because he can play anywhere.
“But, once you played him as one of them two deeper midfielders and he’s dictating the tempo of the game, he just went to a different level.”
Modric is one of the best ever!
Luka Modric was already a celebrity when he joined Tottenham, but he reached a whole other level after he transferred to Real Madrid in 2012.
The Croatian had a terrible initial season in Spain, but he has since improved dramatically. He has won 23 trophies there, including five Champions League crowns.
Individually, Modric has done a great deal. In 2018, he won FIFA’s Best Player of the Year, UEFA’s Best Player in Europe, and the Ballon d’Or.
Modric will be remembered as one of the best midfielders to ever play the game, and Tottenham fans are fortunate to have watched him play for them for four years.
