Tottenham was able to convince Genoa to release Djed Spence this month, and he may not be seen again for a while.
Spence returned from a failed loan spell with Leeds and was soon farmed out to the Italian club by Spurs, who had completed their own deal for Radu Dragusin.
Spence, a £20 million transfer from Middlesbrough, has struggled since his arrival. Antonio Conte refused to play him, and since then, questions about his attitude and tardiness have lingered.
According to Sky Sports journalist Michael Bridge, Spence’s Tottenham career is almost certainly gone.
Djed Spence does not have a Tottenham future.
Speaking to GiveMeSport about Spence, Bridge admitted that he is virtually done at Spurs and that the club is glad to have gotten him the move they did.
“Unless things change, Spence has no future at Tottenham. That is something I believe we can easily state. But give him credit if he has been persuaded to travel to Genoa. Many players could choose to sit on their backsides, stay in London, and wait till the summer. At least he’s making an effort to try something different. It is not easy to go to Genoa. So, I’m sure Spurs wish him the best, and I believe they did well to secure this contract,” Bridge added.
It was time for him to prove himself.
There is some debate that Spence hasn’t really had a chance to show himself at Tottenham’s first-team level.
However, the fact that two senior managers, Conte and now Ange Postecoglou, have chosen not to work with him, combined with rumblings from Leeds about lateness and other difficulties, shows there’s more at play here.
For Spence, the transfer to Genoa offers an opportunity to demonstrate his abilities. We all know there’s a top player someplace; it’s simply a matter of pulling it out of him.
Spence is ultimately responsible for dealing with the off-field issues. As a footballer, there is no reason to continually arrive late.
