“It killed me.” Retired England player claims he never had any intention of signing for Leeds United

Prior to moving to Leeds United, Robbie Fowler has said that he never wanted to leave Liverpool.

Following just over eight years in the starting lineup at his childhood Club, Liverpool, Fowler signed a contract for approximately £11 million to join Leeds in December 2001. In his 32 appearances, Fowler scored 14 goals.

With the Whites mired in debt, Fowler spent just over two years at Leeds before signing with Manchester City for a sum much less than what Anfield paid to acquire him.

After Leeds finished fifth in his first half season, he moved to City without even playing out the full season since the next year was difficult for both the team and him.

However, former England player Fowler has now admitted, peaking on the Up Front with Simon Jordan Podcast, that he was dejected by the Reds’ lack of commitment and never intended to leave Liverpool for Leeds.

An example of a signing Leeds didn’t need is Fowler.
Fowler stated, “It killed me to leave Liverpool because I wasn’t playing.” That does not imply disdain for Leeds. That does not imply disdain for Man City. My desire was to remain in Liverpool.

Looking back, I can see that you are a commodity, which is probably why I’m getting annoyed with the game right now. From an external perspective, players often face criticism over their devotion; nonetheless, loyalty is a mutually beneficial relationship that benefits both parties.

“The club will let you go as soon as they decide you’re not good enough.” The ones who receive the most criticism are the players.

With Robbie Keane, Alan Smith, and Mark Viduka as Leeds‘ attacking alternatives, Fowler is just another example of a deal that was unnecessary at the time and led to a severe financial disaster.

Rio Ferdinand cited Leeds‘ financial mismanagement at the time of Seth Johnson‘s amazing contract offer on his own show last week.

The club’s decline through the league ranks was caused by the decisions made by Aaron Lennon, who also disclosed the enormous professional contract he was given at Leeds as a teenager.

Leeds are lucky to have proprietors who can make large investments while still abiding by the regulations.
