Tottenham Hotspur Right Back Djed Spence made his Genoa debut on Sunday afternoon, helping the team defeat Salernitana 2-1.
Tottenham completed a massive deal earlier this month, attracting Genoa defender Radu Dragusin to North London.
Spurs successfully fended off a hijack attempt by Bayern Munich, pulling off a big coup in the process.
Dragusin appears to have a bright future ahead of him, and Tottenham will be thrilled to have beaten one of Europe’s superpowers to his signature.
Tottenham were able to sweeten the deal by loaning right back Djed Spence to Genoa, allowing him to move in the opposite direction.
Spence‘s loan stay with Leeds United was cut short earlier in January, and he has now travelled to Italy in an attempt to restart his career.
Italian media reacts to Djed Spence’s performance for Genoa.
We know Spence as a right wing back, but he started on the left flank for Genoa against Salernitana on Sunday.
Alberto Gilardino put the 23-year-old in the starting lineup, and he played the entire 90 minutes in Genoa‘s 2-1 win.
Genoa fell behind 1-0 early on, but Spence and his teammates battled to take all three points on the road.
Tuttomercatoweb gave Spence a 6.5 out of 10, indicating that he certainly needed to adjust to a new experience in Italian football.
They stated that Spence improved throughout the game and contributed to Genoa’s victory.
“The reality is undoubtedly unfamiliar and necessitated physiological acclimatisation. The wing is not his, but he gradually gains confidence by demonstrating himself routinely at the end,” they wrote.
Eurosport also assigned a 6.5 rating, indicating that Spence improved in the second half.
“A good debut for Tottenham’s winger. In the first half, he struggles to find room for his runs; in the second 45 minutes, he increases the engine speed.”
Spence had a 6/10 grade from Pianeta Genoa in 1893, indicating that he was solid if unspectacular, but had a favourable attitude towards his dbeut.
“He doesn’t make superlative plays, other than the advance on Candreva when he shoots: he alternates positioning on the flanks, his personality seems to be the right one.”
Tottenham will be pleased to hear this good start.
Spence moved to Tottenham from Middlesbrough for £20 million in 2022, however he has made little appearances for Antonio Conte.
Spence was loaned to Rennes before making only five league appearances for Leeds, which resulted in his return to Tottenham.
Spurs desperately need Spence to regain his best form, making him more marketable on the transfer market and enabling them recoup some of their investment.
Spence appears to have no future under Ange Postecoglou, so getting him in form elsewhere appears to be the best way.
Tottenham desperately need this trade to work; this is Spence’s third loan move away from Spurs, and permanent interest must build ahead of the summer transfer season.
Spurs are unlikely to recoup their £20 million investment, but any assistance, even a great spell at Genoa, would undoubtedly help Tottenham raise funds this summer.
