James Maddison and Dominic Solanke: one is called up to the England team, while the other is not.

Later this afternoon, when Lee Carsley unveils his second national squad, David Ornstein discloses that only one Tottenham Hotspur player will be called up to the England national team.

The Spurs aren’t as dominant as they once were.

Not too many years ago, Tottenham had over half of the starting eleven and the greatest number of players in the England squad. At one point, Danny Rose, Kyle Walker, Dele Alli, Eric Dier, and Harry Kane were all starting for the Three Lions while playing for the Tottenham Lilywhites. But Spurs have had trouble fielding many English players for the national team in recent years, particularly since Kane has left the nest.

Dominic Solanke and James Maddison are the two English players in Tottenham’s starting lineup, so it makes sense that they would be the most likely candidates to be called up for the national team. Since last month, when Carsley made his first squad announcement, Maddison has not received a call from England manager Gareth Southgate, and Solanke has not heard from him in seven years.

According to Ornstein, Maddison has once again been left out despite his outstanding form, even though Solanke is scheduled to play with the Three Lions this month.

James Maddison has terrible luck.

It was understandable to keep Maddison out of the summer Euros squad because his performance following his recovery was just subpar. Given that Maddison was still developing his form, Lee Carlsey’s rejection of him the last time out made logical. But it seems rather unfair to leave the Spurs midfielder out this time around given that he has been among the Premier League’s best players for the last six weeks. Maddison should continue to be hungry and compete for a berth in the November international team.
