Jamie Carragher believes the £22 million midfielder that Tottenham failed to sign has enormous potential.

Jamie Carragher has recently praised the potential of a midfielder whom Tottenham Hotspur were linked with in January.

Ange Postecoglou is regarded for his ability to develop young players, and it appeared that Spurs were looking for a number of high-potential players.

Lucas Bergvall eventually signed with the club on deadline day, which was a big coup given Barcelona’s interest.

However, it would be surprising if Postecoglou and Daniel Levy stopped there in their efforts to recruit the best young talent to North London.

Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite is a name that is now frequently spoken in relation to the summer, a youngster who has consistently demonstrated his high ceiling.

However, Spurs were said to be interested in signing Adam Wharton before the midfielder signed for Crystal Palace for £22 million in January.

And, speaking on Monday Night Football last night, Jamie Carragher remarked how impressed he had been with Wharton in the Premier League.

Carragher believes the Tottenham-linked midfielder has fitted in smoothly at Palace since his arrival, and predicts he will be a player much spoken about in the future.

Jamie Carragher believes Tottenham linked Adam Wharton has a lot of promise.

Carragher was particularly impressed by Wharton’s performance against Chelsea and is enthusiastic about his potential if Palace remain up this season.

He stated, “I was impressed with him.” It’s another step for him, as a young player.

“This was in the game against Chelsea, and I thought he gave a very promising performance that bodes well for Crystal Palace moving forward.

“If Palace can continue in the Premier League, I believe he is a guy we will be talking about a lot in the future.

Of course, given the potential that Carragher has rightly highlighted, Tottenham may feel this is one they let slip away.

We may never know how interested Spurs were in signing Wharton, but their talent spotting strategy appears to be succeeding. And it bodes well given Tottenham’s expected excellent financial position this summer.
