According to Ryan Taylor of The Daily Mirror, Tottenham Hotspur is still very much in the running for Ivan Toney’s signing, despite what certain media outlets have claimed.
For the past few months, Spurs Web has provided all the information about Toney’s future and Tottenham’s purported interest in the striker.
Although Spurs would want to sign the English international, certain reports over the past few weeks, including an update by The Independent, stated that they are priced out of a move after Brentford sought £80 million for his talents.
The report also stated both Arsenal and Chelsea appear to be in the running for the 27-year-old, with the player reportedly favoring the Emirates Stadium.
However, in a recent Sky Sports piece, the centre-forward stated that he intends to remain at the Gtech Community Stadium this month.
Tottenham are still in the mix.
Taylor has now stated that Toney has been on Spurs’ radar for some time and that it is too early to put the Lilywhites out of the contest to recruit the Bees star.
The journalist stated on The Spurs Chat Podcast: “I have always understood that Spurs are a team that has been looking at Toney; but, I am not sure if they have the muscle to compete with Chelsea and Arsenal at the conclusion of the season.
“People have dismissed Tottenham’s interest in Toney, but the information I’ve received suggests that Spurs should not be ruled out. Although Toney wants to join Arsenal, he would prefer that transfer over anything else at this time.
Spurs Web Opinion
Tottenham will not bid about £80 million for Toney this season, but if the striker stays at Brentford until next summer, Spurs will be back in the race.
If he does not sign an extension, the 27-year-old will have only one year left on his deal at the end of the season, making him potentially available for about £40 million to £50 million.
