Jurgen Klopp addresses Erling Haaland’s punishment following Liverpool’s fine and suspension

After Manchester City were held to a 3-3 draw by Tottenham Hotspur, Erling Haaland was furious with referee Simon Hooper.

Jurgen Klopp is unconcerned about Erling Haaland facing retrospective punishment, as Virgil van Dijk did following his red card at Newcastle.

On Sunday evening, after Manchester City were beaten to a 3-3 draw by Tottenham Hotspur at the Etihad, Haaland was enraged that referee Simon Hooper had declined to play an advantage from his late ball to Jack Grealish.

The centre-forward later tweeted the acronym ‘wtf’ in reaction to a video of pthe event, and it has been suggested that the City forward may face disciplinary action from the Football Association as a result of his outburst.

Van Dijk was fined £100,000 and handed an extra game ban in August for his response to being dismissed at Newcastle, and some have speculated that Haaland may face a similar fate for his post-match anger.

Despite the obvious positives for Liverpool, Klopp is uninterested in seeing the Premier League’s 14-goal leading scorer suspended for City.

“I don’t know,” Klopp admitted. “Most of the time, no one would have recognised what Virgil said. Wasn’t it a ‘F****** joke,’ he said? I have no idea what Haaland said because I didn’t pay attention.

“That’s how it is. To be honest, I didn’t think twice about it; when I heard about it, I didn’t think, ‘Oh, we get it, they don’t.’ Accepting it is much easier when you are not emotionally connected; it is more difficult when you are emotionally attached. They would have most likely considered it, and I have no judgement on the decision.”

Klopp also stated that Joel Matip‘s knee injury is likely to be serious, as the Reds await the results of a scan after his departure from Sunday’s 4-3 win against Fulham.

“When the doctor comes in and says ‘it doesn’t look great,’ [we fear the worst], but we have to wait for the scans, and the scan isn’t here yet,” he added.
As you may imagine, it does not look well. When the doctor says that, it is never good news. In all my years, I’ve never heard somebody say, ‘Oh my God, [the original diagnosis of an injury] is absolutely erroneous, there’s nothing wrong, he can play tomorrow.’ It does not occur.”
