Leeds United have accepted personal terms with AZ Alkmaar and Greece player Pantelis Chatzidiakos, according to Greek outlet Sportime, with the two parties locked in financial discussions for the last 15 days. A fee has yet to be agreed upon.
Chatzidiakos, 26, is in the final year of his contract with AZ despite appearing 52 times for the Eredivisie club last season – either as a right-back or in the centre. They advanced to the Europa Conference League semi-finals before losing to West Ham.
Chatzidiakos, who has 27 Greece caps, has played 207 times for AZ and is one of their key players. However, with his contract coming to an end, AZ may be forced to sell. Leeds has come knocking to bring the Greek to the city.
Leeds and Chatzidiakos have reached an agreement on personal terms. However, Leeds and AZ have yet to agree on a cost, despite optimism that a deal may be made. AZ is seeking a sum of between £2.6m and £3.5m. So far, Leeds has made a bid of £2.2 million.
According to the report, the Greek star is reportedly ‘likely’ to transfer to Elland Road. Of course, Leeds signed three players this summer: Ethan Ampadu, Karl Darlow, and Sam Byram. Chatzidiakos could be next.
Leeds have reached an agreement with Alkmaar and Greece’s Pantelis Chatzidiakos.
So it appears that Leeds will be acquiring a defender sooner rather than later. Nat Phillips is still being linked with a move to Liverpool, but Liam Cooper‘s injury may have encouraged Leeds to bring in two players.
Chatzidiakos appears to be a genuine bargain at the figures stated, based on the metrics and both his form and consistency last season. Even if Leeds moved to the latter end of the price range desired by Alkmaar. It’s been a busy week.
