In a swap deal, Leeds and Tottenham could each exchange a player during the January transfer window.
In January, Leeds has the opportunity to conduct a swap deal with Tottenham that could benefit both clubs. With Son Heung-min leaving for the Asian Cup next month, Ange Postecoglou‘s Spurs will need more firepower up front, and they could swap players with Leeds to get that extra forward.
Football. Tottenham have reportedly looked into Leeds‘ Wilfried Gnonto, who has struggled to reclaim his place in Daniel Farke‘s starting lineup after suffering an ankle injury earlier in the season. Instead, the manager has favoured a front four of Joel Piroe, Crysensio Summerville, Georginio Rutter, and Dan James.
Gnonto is now free to leave for the Premier League after the club turned down significant interest in the summer. If the Italian becomes available in January, a number of clubs will be interested in luring him away from Elland Road, but Spurs have one significant advantage over rival suitors.
Despite his parent club’s selection crisis at the back, defender Joe Rodon has spent the season on loan at Leeds from Tottenham Hotspur, and the club could move to sign him permanently. In recent games, Postecoglou has been forced to use full-backs Ben Davies and Emerson Royal in the middle of the back four.
Leeds could try to sign Rodon on a permanent basis in January to help their promotion push, and the player is open to the move after failing to secure a spot in the Spurs team since joining from Swansea in 2020.
If Leeds do try to sign Rodon and Spurs want to bring Gnonto to north London, it’s not impossible for the two clubs to work out a swap deal to ensure that they both get what they want out of the January window. Though Leeds is likely to demand an additional fee because they value Gnonto more than Rodon.
Gnonto submitted a transfer request in August and refused to play for Leeds, missing three games as a result, but a deal did not materialise in the summer.
He later returned to the squad and apologised for his actions, but he has remained unpopular with Farke, and rumours about the 20-year-old who impressed as a sparkplug in the top flight despite Leeds’ relegation have persisted.
With Son off to the Asian Cup, Richarlison on the sidelines, and Dejan Kulusevski recently used in a central role, Spurs could use Gnonto out wide – but they may have to part ways with Rodon in order to do so.
