One of Leeds United’s Championship rivals has fired their head coach, amid widespread speculation that a new big-name hire as his successor is on the way.
After 15 months in command, Birmingham City have parted ways with John Eustace, and there are now widespread speculations that Wayne Rooney will take over in the Blues dugout. Rooney was in charge of MLS club DC United but stepped down this weekend after failing to lead the club to the playoffs.
“It is essential that the board of directors and the football management are fully aligned on the importance of implementing a winning mentality and a culture of ambition across the entire football club,” Birmingham City said in a statement released on Monday morning.
“With this in mind, Birmingham City parted ways with head coach John Eustace today.” Eustace leaves after 15 months in charge, having contributed to the club’s on-field stability and strength since his appointment in July 2022.
“In his first season as manager, he led the team to a 17th-place finish, securing Sky Bet Championship status with three games to go.”
“During his time at St Andrew‘s, he inspired the team to produce a number of memorable moments in difficult circumstances.”
“The club would like to express its gratitude to John for his contribution.” His hard work and dedication were visible throughout his tenure in B9, and he will always be welcome back to St Andrew‘s.
“In the coming days, a new first-team manager will be announced, who will be responsible for creating an identity and a clear ‘no fear’ playing style that all Birmingham City teams will adopt and embrace.”
“The club will be issuing no further comment at this time.”
Eustace departs the Blues in sixth place in the Championship league, a point and a place behind fifth-placed Leeds. Under Eustace, the Blues defeated Daniel Farke‘s Whites 1-0 in a league match at St Andrew’s in August.
Birmingham advanced to the play-offs with a 3-1 victory over West Bromwich Albion on Friday night, following a 4-1 victory over visiting Huddersfield Town the previous week. After Rangers terminated Michael Beale, Eustace has rapidly emerged as the new frontrunner for the post.
