Leeds United target Ethan Ampadu has been described as a “class act” by BBC Wales journalist Rob Phillips, who believes the Chelsea defender should be playing Premier League football.
Nizaar Kinsella of the Evening Standard tweeted on July 18 that the Wales international is on his way to Leeds to complete his physical and sign the contract after a £7 million fee plus £3 million in add-ons was agreed on July 17.
The BBC Wales football correspondent predicted that Ampadu, 22, will be a “future Wales captain” while speaking to BBC Radio Leeds on the prospective signing of Ampadu.
“That’s how highly rated he is, and he’s sort of matured in the Wales squad,” Phillips added. “I don’t think many Wales fans would argue with this; I’d say he’s been Wales’ best player, not just during the World Cup, which was so disappointing in Qatar, but also since then.”
“He rarely puts a foot wrong for Wales – a true quality player.” His versatility will come in handy, and if you get him for £7 million plus add-ons, I believe many Welsh fans will believe he belongs in the Premier League.
“It hasn’t worked out for him at Chelsea, despite the fact that he’s their longest-serving player at the moment, despite the fact that he’s only played 12 times.” That has always puzzled us, but for the Championship, I’m sure Sheffield United fans would agree, he was very good for them as well.
“He’s a high-quality, class act, Ethan Ampadu.”
Battler
Phillips clearly adores Ampadu, as evidenced by his glowing comments for the versatile defender, which comes as no surprise given how well he is regarded inside the Wales national team structure.
He has played 43 times for his country since making his debut six years ago, and there is little doubt he will be in the running to replace Aaron Ramsey as captain when he retires in a few years.
Although he has never played in the Championship, he has gained valuable experience playing abroad in recent seasons, making 60 Serie A matches on loan at Venezia and Spezia.
Ampadu has demonstrated his ability to play in midfield as well as just about anywhere along the backline, which might be important during a long season in the second tier.
He’s recognised for his leadership abilities and tough-tackling, battling displays, and he could immediately become a fan favourite at Elland Road if the Whites are successful in completing a transfer.
