Leeds United are reportedly considering selling Illan Meslier during the January transfer window after keeping him in the summer.
After beating Millwall on Sunday, the Whites had their second consecutive clean sheet under Daniel Farke, a sensation Illan Meslier hasn’t seen since April 2022 in the Premier League under Jesse Marsch.
It will undoubtedly help the Frenchman’s confidence between the sticks following a difficult 2023 season.
What’s the most recent news about Meslier?
While the custodian will be focused on the trip to Hull City this week, Football Insider reports that the club is considering selling him in the January transfer window.
According to reports, the club was open to listen to bids in the summer window after he was withdrawn from the squad in the run-up to relegation in May, and may do so again.
Is Meslier willing to leave?
Another factor to examine is if Meslier genuinely wants to depart, given that he stayed in the summer despite widespread expectation that he would.
He discussed his decision to stay at Elland Road this season on the Official Leeds United podcast last week:
“I also don’t think it was a good idea for me to leave and just let the club be in the second division, because you go to play somewhere and see them in the middle of the second division and think, ‘Oh no, you contributed to this result.'”
“So I think the best option for me was to stay and play with big performances and try to put Leeds in the first two places (automatic promotion), and then we’ll see what happens.”
Meslier still has a lot of work to do before supporters can trust him as our starting custodian, but selling him would be a gamble.
Given that we could require a large amount to consider letting him go, the price tag needs to be the most critical determinant in whether he leaves.
Karl Darlow is a capable backup in the EFL, although he has yet to shine in his two outings.
