The Athletic journalist stated on Monday (28 August) that the Whites have more than one full-back on their radar after Sam Byram was injured against Ipswich, and an enquiry has been made about Spence‘s potential availability.

The 23-year-old isn’t in Ange Postecoglou‘s plans, having struggled to make an impact since joining on a permanent basis from Middlesbrough last season, making only four Premier League appearances before spending the second half of the season on loan with Rennes in Ligue 1.

Daniel Farke’s side are hoping to sign the former Nottingham Forest man this summer, having already completed one deal with Spurs earlier in the window, with Joe Rodon joining the ranks at Elland Road on loan.

A fascinating prospect

Spence is more than capable of being an elite full-back in the Premier League, let alone the Championship, and he demonstrated this in his last term in the second tier with Forest in the 2021/22 season.

He has struggled at Tottenham and had disagreements with Neil Warnock while the two worked together at Middlesbrough, with Warnock being less than impressed with the defender’s attitude and application.

Farke has stated that he wants a united group this season, with everyone at Elland Road pushing in the same direction as United attempts to return to the Premier League, and it remains to be seen whether Spence is interested in assisting the Whites on that quest.

Spence seemed to relish proving those who doubted him wrong when at Forest, and with so many writing him off at Tottenham, a loan move to one of, if not the, biggest clubs in the Championship would be the ideal opportunity to do so once more.

It would provide vital depth at full-back for Leeds while also being a genuinely exciting alternative, as Spence is more than capable of storming England‘s second tier.
