West Ham United defender Ben Johnson has surfaced as a target for Leeds United this month, with the full-back’s contract set to expire in June – and both Leeds and Millwall have begun discussions.
Johnson, 23, could be available this month after making only 10 appearances in all competitions. Only three Premier League appearances, albeit he has started and substituted in West Ham‘s previous two games.
Our interest piqued earlier in the window when another name was connected with filling the gap at full-back. It follows links with Connor Roberts, Neco Williams, Ben Davies, and several other players.
It has since been revealed that West Ham attempted to extend Johnson’s contract, which expires in the summer, but Johnson refused two offers. His lack of playing time is certainly an issue at this point.
West Ham drew with Sheffield United last time out as they endure a sticky stretch of form and Johnson that came on in midfield – receiving praise from boss David Moyes, as he performed in an uncomfortable position.
Leeds and Millwall have made approaches for West Ham’s Ben Johnson.
Leeds, however, remain interested in signing the England U21 player. Football Transfers reports that we have approached West Ham for him, but we are not alone. Millwall has also made a move.
It is now up to West Ham to decide whether to accept the move. It is unclear whether Leeds or Millwall’s approach is permanent or a loan with a price. Stuart Pearce has praised this player as “wonderful”.
In what has been a difficult week for Leeds off the pitch in terms of bringing new players to Elland Road, the club has also been quite busy on the pitch. Leeds face Daniel Farke‘s former club Norwich on Wednesday night.
