Leeds United have been linked with signing a number of new right-backs before the end of the transfer window
The Whites unexpectedly lost both Djed Spence and Luke Ayling earlier this month, and a replacement is required to avoid a shortage for the rest of the season.
Leeds are primarily eyeing the Premier League loan market in their desire to reinforce, with Connor Roberts, Neco Williams, Ben Johnson, and Calvin Ramsay being reported targets.
All of those players are second-choice at their present clubs, thus Leeds are considering bringing them to Elland Road on a temporary basis.
However, in the most recent episode of the Square Ball Podcast, Phil Hay stated that there is one player on that list who they truly like to sign, but a deal is extremely doubtful. Neco Williams is that dude.
Williams is the right-back Leeds actually want.
He went on to say: “The right-back they would really like is Neco Williams, but I think we can assume that is not going to happen.”
Leeds will find it difficult to prise Williams away from the City Ground this month, as new manager Nuno Espirito Santo sees him as part of his plans.
Williams has played in all five of Forest’s matches under Nuno, with fellow right-back Serge Aurier the man they would prefer to transfer in the coming weeks.
If Steve Cooper had been in control, Leeds‘ tale may have been quite different. As late as November, Forest was eager to loan him out after falling down the pecking order.
Leeds are not afraid to be patient in order to land their top targets, but Williams believes they are currently fighting a losing battle.
