Ian Poveda will miss Leeds United’s next three games, and as a regular on Daniel Farke’s bench, he needs to be replaced – and the club inadvertently hinted last night that it will be Mateo Joseph.
Poveda has been called up to the Colombian National Team for the next two weeks. This is the winger’s first call-up to the national team, and he will play in what amounts to a B-team Colombia squad this week.
Indeed, the Colombian players involved are those who have finished the season with their clubs, such as the MLS, and others who have been granted permission. Daniel Farke explained why he abandoned Poveda.
He will need to be replaced on the bench after being a regular sub this season. In all likelihood, it will be one of two candidates: Joe Gelhardt or Joseph. On Thursday night, the Under-21s were in action.
The Whites lost 3-1 at home to Hertha Berlin in the Premier League International Cup following victories over OGC Nice and Hertha Berlin. Leeds did see a lot of action.
Mateo Joseph is expected to play for Leeds on Saturday.
Nowadays, clubs bring 23 players to a game, with three not making the bench. Kris Klaesson, our third-choice stopper, is usually one of them. It’s possible that Joseph or one of the extras is involved.
Joseph has only had six senior appearances for Leeds, but has yet to play for the first team this season. Only appearing on the bench twice. Gelhardt is the favourite, but Thursday serves as a warning.
