Leeds United may miss out on a £10m+ payment due to a Marc Roca twist.

According to Estadio Deportivo, Real Betis will only be able to recruit Marc Roca for £10.4 million (€12 million) at the end of the season if Leeds United are promoted to the Premier League.

The news was published by the Spanish outlet on Wednesday (8 November) in an interview with the 26-year-old, who is due to be called up by Spain for their forthcoming fixtures.

It was previously rumoured that Betis will contemplate exercising Roca’s right-to-buy clause at the end of the season [TEAMtalk, 2 October], but it may not be as simple as that.

According to the Estadio Deportivo article, “Betis saved a purchase option worth 12 million Euros.”

“Aside from the agreed-upon price in their contract, the clubs reached a verbal agreement to extend the loan if the English team fails to be promoted to the Premier League at the end of this season.” The operation has been approved by all three parties.”

Roca will almost definitely remain a Real Betis player next season, but whether Leeds receives an eight-figure fee for the midfielder remains to be seen.

Leeds fans would probably welcome the Spaniard’s departure, especially if it meant recouping the full fee paid to purchase him from Bayern Munich in June 2022.

If the Whites do not achieve promotion, Betis will take Roca on loan for another season without paying United. That simply does not help Leeds in any way.

Roca‘s Elland Road contract will expire at the end of the 2024-25 season, with only one year remaining, and his value may fall as a result.

The goal for Daniel Farke’s side this season has always been promotion – possibly even more so given because it means getting rid of Roca and obtaining a sum in the region of £10 million.
