Leeds United might face a points deduction following a new £20m payout; according to Wyness.

Keith Wyness, former Everton manager, has stated Leeds United may violate Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) and face a points deduction if they win the play-off final on Sunday (26 May).

Speaking on the latest episode of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old, who was CEO at Goodison Park from 2004 to 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs, suggested that the Whites squad will be entitled to £20 million in win bonuses if they return to the top flight, potentially pushing them over the edge of the regulations.

Former Everton manager Keith Wyness has stated that Leeds United may violate Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) and face a points deduction if they win the play-off final on Sunday (26 May).

Daniel Farke’s Whites beat Norwich in the semi-finals after placing third in the regular season, while Russell Martin’s team defeated West Brom after finishing fourth.

Leicester, who have already been charged with a PSR violation for the 2022–23 season, and Ipswich have already achieved automatic promotion to the top flight.

Leeds face a ‘£20m’ compensation if they win the play-off final, says Wyness.

Wyness said that promoted teams should be given a two or three-year “amnesty” to establish themselves while avoiding punishment for excessive spending.

He said on Football Insider’s Insider Track podcast: “When I looked at the stats at the top level, I understood we might be in the most absurd scenario.

“If Leeds get promoted on Sunday, they may breach PSR and face a points reduction due to the win and promotion incentives they must pay the players.

“That could be the amount that sends them over the brink. It simply makes no logic at all.

“It is extremely common in the Championship to incentivize promotion for the squad.

“I feel the Leeds squad might be entitled up to £20 million if they win at Wembley.

“It goes back to what I’ve been saying for months: we need an amnesty for promoted clubs.

“Give them two or three years to establish themselves in the top flight.

“We need to find a way to give these clubs a chance. “It makes the league more exciting and competitive.”
