Dan Plumley has revealed that automatic promotion to the Premier League would earn Leeds United £120 million this season.
With the promotion race so tight, the Whites could fall into the play-offs, despite being one point clear of Ipswich with nine games remaining.
“There is, but it is not as much as you would think as an add-on,” he exclusively told MOT Leeds News.
“The £120 million minimum sum associated to promotion is paid regardless of how you get there because it is TV broadcasting money, and obviously if you stay in the league, it doubles, which is where the huge windfall lies.
“In terms of extra revenue generated by going up in the play-offs, it’s quite minimal in comparison; you’ve got one extra home match; Leeds averaged around £1 million per match in the Premier League, so it will be a little bit less, but let’s say £1 million for the home match; you have a little bit to come from the away match, but that’s going to be at a fairly low level; and then there’s the TV money.”
“Based on estimations, we believe it is roughly £100,000 for a home fixture and £10,000 for an away fixture, with the final at Wembley adding another £1.5-2 million from ticket sales and the TV fee.
“Let’s say, and I’m being conservative, £3.5million from those additional games which is a decent amount of money, but of course, the jeopardy in the play-offs is you don’t go up so on a risk and reward basis, I’m sure most of the clubs would rather be out of the way with automatic promotion.”
Daniel Farke‘s men are the squad to defeat right now, as they have yet to lose a Championship game in 2024, with only one tie.
The German, however, is not getting carried away and will want to finish first as Leicester continue to struggle.
Forget the playoffs; the modest payment isn’t worth the anxiety.
