Kieran McKenna, the manager of Ipswich Town, has stated that he believes his team is ready to compete in the Premier League.
McKenna has been heavily linked with a move to Crystal Palace in recent weeks, and while Oliver Glasner appears to be in line for the position at Selhurst Park following Roy Hodgson’s decision to step down, the Ipswich manager is certainly on the radar of those in the top tier.
As a result, it would not be surprising to see him associated with any Premier League positions that open up before the end of the season. McKenna has done an outstanding job at Ipswich, guiding the team from League One to the top four of the Championship, where they currently compete for an automatic promotion position.
The Tractor Boys might climb up to third place if they see off the bottom of the table. Rotherham United face Leeds United and Southampton at home on Tuesday night, and with only 13 games remaining this season, they will fancy their chances of pipping them to second place.
McKenna’s attention are currently dominated by the struggle for promotion, but he has not shied away from his desire to manage in the top flight sooner rather than later.
“I’ve been in the Premier League as a first-team coach and had a significant contribution to some big wins and good seasons there,” McKenna told the East Anglian Daily Times. “So I know the level, I’ve worked at that level, and I believe I can assist players and teams at that level.
“Yeah, ultimately in my career, that’s where I want to work and make a difference. However, I believe other instructors in the chain are capable of doing so as well. There are excellent managers at all levels. I appreciate my job here. It’s a tremendous football club, a great bunch to work with, and that’s where the focus is right now. I’m enjoying the really good season that we’re having.”
