Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna will be hoping Massimo Luongo’s ankle injury is not too serious. Ipswich are currently second in the Championship table, and after defeating Sunderland over the weekend, they are three points ahead of closest challengers Southampton
However, the Tractor Boys were without Luongo for that encounter, and the midfielder was noticeably absent. Prior to Saturday, Luongo, who has two goals this season, has missed only one league game, a 2-0 victory over Middlesbrough, due to suspension.
McKenna acknowledged after the game that the Australian international sustained an injury in training last week, but he couldn’t say much more as he awaited diagnostics.
“He rolled his ankle in a really unfortunate incident on Thursday,” McKenna told the East Anglian Daily Times. “He will have scans this week to determine the severity.
“We hope it isn’t too serious. There is clearly some swelling, but he was nowhere near it tonight.”
The revelation will upset Ipswich fans, who have watched their team dragged down by Southampton and Leeds United in recent weeks. The win over Sunderland was the Suffolk club‘s first league win since mid-December, and it has significantly harmed their promotion chances.
The Tractor Boys, who are still new to the Championship after winning promotion from League One last season, face league leaders Leicester City at the King Power Stadium next time out, and with Sam Morsy suspended, they’ll be hoping Luongo can recover in time to bolster their midfield ranks in what could be a crucial game at the top of the Championship table. Sky Sports will broadcast the event live on Monday, January 22.
