Leeds United suffer a setback as David Ornstein provides an update on ‘target’ | Cardiff City boss addresses interest

Tonight’s Leeds United transfer news.

Emi Buendia, a Leeds United target, has agreed to a contract extension with Aston Villa, according to David Ornstein.

Ornstein, who rose to prominence as a dependable BBC journalist, now works for The Athletic, and he broke the news on Sunday at lunchtime that Buendia will be staying at Villa Park for another season. His new contract will now last until 2027, adding one additional year to his existing one.

The Argentine midfielder was sidelined for the entire 2023/24 season due to an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, so he had to be reintroduced into the first team this season. He’s made 18 appearances for the first team, 11 of which were in the Premier League, but only three of them were starts.

Unai Emery admitted earlier this week that the 28-year-old could leave, but he is currently needed. In a post on X, David Ornstein broke the news that an agreement had been reached between Villa and Buendia. The football correspondent added that he has interest from Germany, Italy and Saudi Arabia but Villa aren’t planning to sanction a permanent exit at present.

EFL columnist Alan Nixon stated on Sunday that Buendia was not interested in returning to the Championship. In the previous week, he has been connected with a move to Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League, which could be a more appealing option for the player to stay in Europe’s best leagues.

Leeds United, on the other hand, have not abandoned their interest in Buendia, with CEO Angus Kinnear admitting in September that the club was looking to sign the one-cap Argentina international following the sale of Georginio Rutter. Villa were not interested in selling him at the time, and with another year added to his contract, it appears that he will remain in the West Midlands for the foreseeable future.

Cardiff City manager addresses Ollie Tanner links.

Championship rivals. Cardiff City will not sell Ollie Tanner to Leeds, Burnley, or any other club for that matter. According to Football Insider, Leeds, their promotion opponents, as well as Premier League clubs Leicester City and Southampton, were interested in the winger.

The 22-year-old was absent from their 2-1 victory against Derby County due to an injury sustained against Swansea City the previous Saturday, which forced him to miss the final two games. Cardiff are in a relegation battle and cannot afford to lose one of their important players, even if a club offers a high amount for his services.

When asked about the speculations, Bluebirds manager Omer Riza replied: “No. Ollie is a young man, one of ours, and he is doing exceptionally well. We need him just as much as the rest of our team, and he’s performing great.

“He’s focused on doing his job at Cardiff and that’s it, really.”

Leeds fans will be able to see firsthand what kind of player Tanner is when the two sides meet at Elland Road next Saturday (February 1). The winger appeared in the reverse encounter in September, which Daniel Farke’s team won 2-0.
