The newest Leeds United news comes as Everton receives a final judgement on their Premier League points deduction appeal after finishing ahead of the Whites last season.
Everton‘s 10-point deduction for violating Premier League financial regulations has been lowered on appeal, the club announced. Leeds United have been keeping a close eye on the issue, following their battle with Everton to stay in the Premier League last season.
The Toffees survived in the final game of the season, but Southampton, Leeds, and Leicester City all dropped down to the Championship. Everton received an immediate 10-point deduction in November for violating Premier League Profitability and Sustainability criteria. The club appealed the ruling, and the deduction has now been lowered by four points.
Everton said in a statement that an Appeal Board has decided to decrease the points deduction imposed by an independent Premier League Commission in November from 10 to six points, effective immediately.
“While the Club is still digesting the Appeal Board’s decision, we are pleased that our appeal resulted in a reduction in the points sanction.”
“We understand the Appeal Board considered the 10-point deduction originally imposed to be inappropriate when assessed against the available benchmarks of which the Club made the Commission aware, including the position under the relevant EFL regulations, and the 9-point deduction that is imposed under the Premier League’s own rules in the event of insolvency.”
The verdict lifts Everton above Nottingham Forest and Brentford in the Premier League rankings, putting them five points ahead of the bottom three, which is a significant boost for Sean Dyche‘s team.
Leeds are one of the clubs rumoured to be exploring legal action against Everton following their claim. Leicester and Burnley are the other two clubs said to be keeping a close eye on the outcome of the appeal, with their next movements unknown.
