Leeds United has a long list of detractors, including Premier League powerhouse Manchester United.
According to the official Manchester United website, the two teams have a “intense rivalry” that dates back to 1906, but has far deeper origins.
It has taken many interesting twists and turns over the years, with the Red Devils taking the most of the bragging rights, though the Whites have had their moments as well.
The battle has now continued in spectacular fashion, with 49ers Enterprises just completing a £170 million takeover of the West Yorkshire club.
According to BBC Sport (22 October), US golfers Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas joined the group, however Northern Irish golfer Rory McIlroy chose not to.
“They asked me if I wanted to come on board, and as a Man United fan, I was like, can’t go anywhere near that,” McIlroy told BBC Sport.
The famous figure’s reasoning behind the decision will likely excite Manchester United fans and irritate Leeds fans in equal measure.
It’s also a setback for 49ers Enterprises, as McIlroy is the UK’s richest sportsperson under the age of 35 [Belfast Live, 19 May 2023].
Leeds and Manchester United, two of the biggest clubs in English football, will definitely meet again soon, with the former hoping to do so during next season’s Premier League campaign.
Leeds United are on the rise under manager Daniel Farke, moving up to third in the Championship table after a 3-2 win over Norwich City on Saturday (21 October), with Crysencio Summerville scoring a dramatic late winner.
