Liverpool can draw hope from Ange Postecoglou’s interview meltdown as Klopp’s decision approaches

Liverpool have apparently shortlisted Ange Postecoglou as a potential Jurgen Klopp successor.

Liverpool could take heart from Ange Postecoglou‘s latest outburst as they look for their next manager. The Tottenham manager is among those being considered at Anfield, however Xabi Alonso remains the favourite for the summer vacancy.

Jurgen Klopp is expected to depart the Reds at the conclusion of the season, having stated in January that he was ‘running out of energy’ in the position and believed it was his responsibility to conclude his stay.

Liverpool is consequently exploring the managerial market for the German’s successor, with Brighton‘s Roberto De Zerbi and Sporting coach Ruben Amorim among those who have been connected with the role. Despite his excellent few seasons in the Bundesliga, Bayer Leverkusen‘s Alonso remains a fan favourite on Merseyside.

However, Bayern Munich is also interested in acquiring the Spaniard’s services this summer, following the decision to part ways with Thomas Tuchel at the end of the season. Alonso has stated throughout the issue that he has yet to make a decision on his future, but Liverpool must be prepared to be turned down by their former midfielder.

If Alonso moves to the Allianz Arena, other alternatives will undoubtedly be considered, and Postecoglou‘s recent statements may imply that not everything is going well for the former Celtic manager at Tottenham. Following his side’s 3-0 defeat at Fulham, the 58-year-old was asked how much the loss would harm Spurs’ top-four aspirations, to which he replied: “Um, see, it’s all done. We’ll just go for sixth place. I mean, what am I supposed to say about that?

“We are, what, two points behind Villa? Yeah? So, what does that mean with 10 games remaining? We have ten games to go. Psychologically, I don’t care about that. There are 10 games remaining, and there is a lot of football to be played.”

Postecoglou’s tensions were understandably high following such a humiliating setback. However, his out-of-character, angry answer may imply that there is still more work to be done at Tottenham before he can genuinely realise his aims.

Liverpool, on the other hand, appear to have a squad poised for quick success, and the possibility to switch clubs to another Big Six side may grow more appealing as the weeks pass if Tottenham fail to win Champions League football for next season.
