Liverpool fans can’t believe what just transpired during Nottingham Forest against Manchester United.

Liverpool fans can’t believe what transpired during Wednesday night’s Manchester United game. The Reds won their FA Cup match against Championship side Southampton, but they had to battle hard to go to the quarter-finals.

Jurgen Klopp‘s side already know they will face rivals United away in the next round, as the draw was done before Wednesday night’s action, but things could have been different if a goal had been disallowed in the East Midlands. United overcame Nottingham Forest away from home with an 89th-minute winner from Casemiro.

The goal was thoroughly reviewed by VAR, but it was eventually awarded despite appearing quite familiar to Liverpool fans who had seen the tape. Raphael Varane was not only offside when the free kick was taken, but he was also facing away from goal, hindering a Forest player’s run.

That was the same reason Virgil van Dijk‘s goal was disallowed in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday, with Wataru Endo to blame. While the goal may have been legally ruled out under the letter of the law, Liverpool’s complaint was that officials and VAR had not enforced it all season, so why did they start in the final?

The very least Reds fans anticipated was for the event to set a new precedent, but if there was one, it didn’t last four days, with Varane appearing to do the exact same thing as Endo, but he got away with it and United’s goal stood. One fan remarked on X: “The United player is standing in an offside position, not moving… the same with Endo. Endo was standing still, not moving. “Same situation.”

Someone else said: “You won’t believe which referee is refereeing in this game wasn’t our goal disallowed because Endo was offside position but when it’s United it’s different story.”
