Tottenham midfielder Giovani Lo Celso is “ready to consider” leaving the club as the team looks for a “game-changer” for Ange Postecoglou.
Spurs’ January transfer plans
As Postecoglou has been coping with a serious squad scarcity recently, sporting director Johan Lange and chairman Daniel Levy want to improve a few critical issues in the coming year.
Injuries and bans hampered the Spurs squad until the recent comeback of key players such as Cristian Romero, Pape Sarr, Destiny Udogie, and Richarlison, to name a few.
Summer signings of note However, Micky van de Ven and James Maddison are still out due to injury, while Postecoglou will be without Sarr, Yves Bissouma, and club captain Son Heung-min in early January.
The aforementioned trio will be leaving England next month to represent their respective countries at AFCON and the Asia Cup, leaving Spurs with little choices.
The January transfer window is an apparent option, and sources say Tottenham is looking for a new center-back. According to Sky, Postecoglou wants Spurs to sign a winger, which has led to their interest in Juventus prodigy Samuel Iling-Junior.
While previous reports indicated that these positions were key priorities, The Mail reported this week that Chelsea star Conor Gallagher remains a goal for Spurs, despite uncertainty surrounding the futures of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Lo Celso.
Despite Gallagher’s newfound importance to the cause, Chelsea may be willing to allow his departure in a “shock” January move to enhance their own transfer budget (The Mail).
This has given Spurs renewed confidence that they will be able to sign their summer target next month, with 90min providing an update on the issue.
Spurs are looking at a trade for Gallagher in light of the Lo Celso situation.
Tottenham are considering a move to sign Gallagher from Chelsea, according to their sources. This comes as Lo Celso appears to be “ready to consider” leaving Spurs, as his contract expires in 2025 and a renewal could be dangerous for the club.
Barcelona are big fans of the Argentine, and a deal isn’t out of the question despite the fact that Lo Celso has just made his way into Postecoglou’s plans.
Spurs are considering moves for other midfielders, including Gallagher, as the former Palace loanee’s chances of joining Postecoglou appear to have resurrected.
Jermaine Jenas, a former Lilywhites midfielder turned pundit, has previously labelled Gallagher as a “game-changer” (MOTD via The Sun), a claim supported by his superb Chelsea showing this season.
“He reminds me a lot of Lampard, and also he [Gareth Southgate] likes to promote from within,” Jenas said of Gallagher’s chances for England.
“I believe Conor Gallagher is a game changer as well.” He’s the type of player you bring on because he makes a difference in the game. He presses, gets into the box, and generates opportunities.”
