Leeds United drew 1-1 with West Bromwich Albion at Elland Road on Friday in the Championship.
Daniel Farke‘s troops fell behind to a disputed goal in the 52nd minute. Brandon Thomas-Asante finished a close-range effort that caught Illan Meslier off guard. On its way into the Leeds goal, the effort looked to brush the Baggies player’s hand.
However, skipper Luke Ayling drew one back for the Whites in the 72nd minute. The veteran got ahead of Erik Pieters to head home a nice Daniel James delivery from the left flank. Meslier made a fantastic stop just before the opponents’ opener to maintain the score at 0-0.
The 23-year-old produced an outstanding fingertip stop to deflect Jed Wallace’s near-post flick onto the woodwork.
Sky Sports analyst Andy Hinchcliffe praised Meslier‘s save, adding, “That is a magnificent fingertip save.”
Beren Cross of Leeds Live gave the Frenchman a 6 out of 10 for his efforts on the night after the game.
He was “helpless for the twice-deflected opening goal,” he wrote. “I didn’t have much else to do.”
As a result, Leeds‘ hunt for their first Championship victory of the season continues.
Meslier has his detractors, particularly when it comes to his kicking, but there’s no denying that he’s an excellent shot-blocker.
You have to wonder if VAR would have overturned West Brom‘s opening in the Premier League.
Leeds will have a difficult season in the second division, but they have a good goalie in Meslier who will hopefully help them bounce back.
