Roy Keane, a Manchester United legend, has emerged as one of the favourites to take command of Leeds United, Sheffield Wednesday’s Championship rivals Sunderland.
Mike Dodds is currently in charge of first-team activities at the Stadium of Light, having stepped in as interim head coach for the second time this season after Michael Beale was relieved of his duties. He had already taken over when Tony Mowbray was dismissed early in the campaign.
He brought the team to the Premier League but was let go owing to poor performance. Keane subsequently went on to coach Ipswich Town from April 2009 to January 2011, which was his final spell as manager.
The 52-year-old has previously coached Aston Villa, Nottingham Forest, and the Republic of Ireland national side. Keane has gained popularity as a pundit in recent years.
He frequently appears on Sky Sports to cover Premier League games and is well-known for his direct approach and harsh assessments. The former Republic of Ireland star is currently rated at 7/1 to make a stunning return to management with Sunderland.
Steve Cooper, who was fired by Nottingham Forest in December, is the bookmakers’ favourite at 3/1. Fellow Manchester United legend Ruud van Nistelrooy, as well as former Sheffield United manager Paul Heckingbottom, are among the front-runners.
Sunderland presently sits 12th in the Championship table, 13 points behind the top six.
