Mercedes and team principal Toto Wolff are searching for their Lewis Hamilton replacement
Formula One icon Johnny Herbert has recommended the “perfect” Lewis Hamilton replacement for Mercedes and Toto Wolff, who can get revenge over one of their rivals in the process. The seven-time world champion is leaving the Silver Arrows for Ferrari in 2025, forcing Wolff to frantically search for a driver to pair with George Russell.
A host of options have stepped forward such as Max Verstappen, Fernando Alonso, Sebastian Vettel and Carlos Sainz. The latter has already won a race this season and is being pushed out of Ferrari by Hamilton and Herbert believes that the Spaniard should be considered, but another option may favour Wolff’s bravery.
The Mercedes team principal has already hinted that he would be open to bringing in a younger driver to learn from Russell and while they already have Andrea Kimi Antonelli in their ranks, could sting Ferrari back by poaching their 18-year-old starlet Oliver Bearman.
The British teenager announced himself to the F1 world when he stepped in for Sainz at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, holding off Hamilton and Lando Norris to finish in seventh place on his debut.
And Herbert believes that he would be the perfect option, should Mercedes be able to lure Bearman away from Ferrari. He thinks that the idea would appeal to Wolff and sees the combination as a “perfect fit” moving forward.
“Carlos Sainz would be one of the replacements Mercedes should look at,” Herbert told Inclave Casino. “He is a solid, very reliable, intelligent driver who could fit in very well.
