After rejecting an invitation to return to Liverpool as sporting director, Michael Edwards has now met with Fenway Sports Group to discuss a different post.
According to the Merseyside press, Edwards met with Liverpool owner John W Henry and FSG president Mike Gordon to discuss a larger role.
It comes just over a week after allegations surfaced that the 44-year-old would seek major control over football operations if he returned after two years away.
According to Paul Joyce of the Times, Edwards met with Henry and Gordon in the same location on Sunday after attending the MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference in Boston.
While it is unclear whether those negotiations ended positively, it is stated that “clarity on whether Edwards will be tempted to return to Anfield is expected soon.”
According to Andy Hunter of the Guardian, Edwards “would be expected to head the recruitment and analytics departments.”
This would require choosing a sporting director and, of course, the next manager, with Joyce indicating that outgoing Bournemouth technical director Richard Hughes may take on the former post.
Joyce, Hunter, and the Telegraph’s Chris Bascombe all believe Xabi Alonso is the leading prospect to succeed Jurgen Klopp.
However, Bascombe adds that Liverpool “will have contingency plans in the unlikely event that Alonso rejects the chance to meet with FSG officials.”
All three media suggest Sporting CP’s Ruben Amorim as an alternative, despite the fact that Alonso is “acutely aware of Liverpool‘s interest.”
Edwards has effectively been out of football since his decision to quit the Reds in 2022, working as a consultant for sports advisory firm Ludonautics.
Ian Graham, Liverpool‘s former director of research, created Ludonautics after leaving the club last year.
