In order to take on Sheffield United and guarantee a spot in the Europa League for the following season, Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham team needs to make a few decisions.
Tottenham only needs one point to finish fifth in the 2023–2024 Premier League and earn a spot in the Europa League. Following Newcastle United’s loss to Manchester United on Wednesday night, it was confirmed that they will return to Europe the following season. At this point, the only thing left to decide is whether Spurs will complete the season in fifth place or if Chelsea will pass them and finish sixth.
Tottenham are clear favourites to stay ahead of their London rivals going into Sunday’s final Premier League game of the season against Sheffield United, as they just need a point away at the Premier League’s bottom team. The Blades have had a disastrous season back in the top division, winning only three of their 37 league games and allowing 101 goals.
After a dismal run of play recently, Tottenham looked much better in their midweek setback against Manchester City, and on another day, they might have won. So, may Postecoglou make a few changes to his Tottenham XI to face Chris Wilder’s side? football.london has a look below.
Oliver Skipp / Emerson Radu Dragusin receives royal treatment.
The first decision Postecoglou must make involves Micky van de Ven. After being used as a left-back in the last moments of the Burnley game and scoring the winner, the Dutchman played the entire 90 minutes as a full-back in the Manchester City defeat.
Although he had previously played as a left-back, Van de Ven faced a difficult assignment in adjusting to Postecoglou’s system while also preventing Kyle Walker and Bernardo Silva from attacking down his side of the pitch. It wasn’t the greatest position for him, but Radu Dragusin’s performance at centre-back was a significant plus from the game.
