Footage from Leeds United’s match against Norwich City on January 24 clearly shows Georginio Rutter being denied a goal.
The Whites won the game 1-0, but there was late drama, when the Canaries received a free kick and threw everyone forward, including their goalkeeper.
Leeds did an excellent job defending the set play, and the ball dropped to Rutter, who stole a march on the Norwich players in the Whites’ half and appeared to be clear through on goal.
However, rather than giving the hosts the edge and waving play on, referee Matthew Donohue called a free kick.
As the video clearly shows, if the Frenchman had been allowed to continue, he would have walked the ball into an empty net since he was faster than goalkeeper Angus Gunn.
It was atrocious officiating, and if Norwich had scored in the last minutes, it would have been the biggest heist of the season.
Referees are advised to allow the game to flow, but Donohue did the opposite, which irritated the Elland Road crowd as well.
That said, these were three key points for Leeds and they’re now just two points off the top two – a terrific position to be in at this stage of the season.
