‘Negotiations beginning’ as Leeds United man creeps towards €5 million exit

Diego Llorente’s stint with Leeds United appears destined to come to an end this summer.

Negotiations are apparently underway as Roma seeks to seal the permanent signing of Diego Llorente from Leeds United. Llorente has spent the past 18 months on loan at the Italian club, having decided to leave Elland Road in January 2023.

However, the Spaniard’s most recent loan with the club has ended, and there is some speculation about what he will do next month. Initially, it was expected that Llorente would eventually make the permanent move to Roma, but recent reports appeared to cast doubt on that notion, implying that the club may opt to promote from within rather than spend the money required to secure the defender’s services.

A new report from Il Tempo, via Voce Giallo Rossa, indicates that Roma has begun talks with Leeds to purchase Llorente. With the summer transfer season being open, a deal might move fast, with a fee of €5 million being mooted by the tabloid.

Leeds signed the centre-back from Real Sociedad in 2020 for a reputed £18 million. He had to wait to make his club debut owing to a groyne issue, and it’s fair to say that injuries got the best of him during his first season with Marcelo Bielsa.

Llorente played a much more consistent role in his second season as Leeds battled for Premier League relegation, but a run of bad form and mistakes saw him lose his spot in the Leeds team under Jessy Marsch, resulting in his ultimate departure after two and a half seasons. He appeared for the team 59 times throughout that period, scoring four goals.

His time with Roma appears to have been much more beneficial, as Llorente appeared in the 2023 Europa League final against Sevilla before making 41 appearances for the team last season, playing significant parts under Jose Mourinho and Daniele De Rossi. Unfortunately, he could not assist the club qualify for the Champions League this season.

Llorente said on his Instagram page earlier this month: “It’s time to reflect and evaluate.” We can’t be happy since we had the team to go above and beyond, and we were so close to doing amazing things.

“However, it was not an easy season, and the team, along with the fans, endured many difficult situations and gave everything we had on the pitch. We struggled and suffered till the end. Thank you for your support in each game. You guys have been amazing. “Off days for rest… and waiting.”
