Keith Hackett claims that Andy Madeley and VAR were right to let Newcastle score the first goal in their victory over Tottenham on Saturday.
After selecting his starting lineup and benching Son Heung-min and other players in the 2-1 loss on January 4, Ange Postecoglou found himself in a difficult situation.
Anthony Gordon soon equalized after Dominic Solanke opened the score, but Joelinton appeared to have handballed throughout the buildup.
The former PGMOL chief explained in an exclusive interview with Tottenham News why the offense might not have been prosecuted at the time, stating that it was an accident.
Hackett stated, “I do think that the ball strikes the hand and that the player did not move his hand to the ball and his actions are not deliberate because of distance and movement.”
Newcastle United vs. Tottenham dispute
“There wouldn’t have been enough to give me handball if it had been given due to subjectivity; it wouldn’t have been overturned.”
With everything else going wrong, Postecoglou will be furious because the last thing he wants is contentious rulings that work against him.
The issue is that no one is certain of the rules or when they should be followed, therefore handball is handball whether it is intentional or not.
Spurs performed significantly better on Saturday, and perhaps things can only get better from here.
Mike Dean has also responded to a contentious incident against Newcastle United in other Tottenham news.
