Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes are believed to have stepped up Liverpool’s search for a new manager in recent days.
According to GIVEMESPORT, Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi is ‘earmarked’ as a potential replacement for Xabi Alonso.
“GMS sources understand that Amorim and Brighton & Hove Albion head coach Roberto De Zerbi have been earmarked as good alternatives to Alonso.
With the latter’s experience in the Premier League meaning that he is known inside-out in terms of his character and philosophy,” the authors wrote.
Hughes has long liked de Zerbi.
It should not be forgotten that Hughes wanted the former Shakhtar manager to take over in 2022.
However, the Seagulls beat the Scot to the punch.
Michael Edwards, Liverpool’s decision-maker and longstanding buddy. Will have to decide whether the 44-year-old is the appropriate fit to succeed Jurgen Klopp.
A transfer to the red half of Merseyside would be a huge step up for De Zerbi.
Even with Brighton’s recent meteoric climb, this remains true.
The good news is that the same can be said for Xabi Alonso and Ruben Amorim, who will be his main competitors.
It will be interesting to see which of the trio. Or any other candidate, prevails in Hughes and Co’s thoughts.
At the moment, it is far too early to call.
