Jamie Redknapp was unhappy with Cristian Romero’s Tottenham Hotspur defending at Old Trafford today.
Ange Postecoglou welcomed the Argentine and Micky van de Ven back on Sunday, as the two played together for the first time since early November.
Rasmus Hojlund scored inside three minutes, thus the centre-back partnership did not get off to the best start.
Bruno Fernandes set Marcus Rashford free, who was eventually tackled by Destiny Udogie.
Hojlund pounced on the loose ball, stealing a yard from Cristian Romero and slamming it past Guglielmo Vicario.
Jamie Redknapp has also blasted Romero for keeping his hands behind his back while attempting to block the shot.
Redknapp is unimpressed with Romero’s defending for Man United’s goal.
On Sky Sports’ coverage of the game, Redknapp detailed why he believes Romero could have done better in United’s first.
“I want to talk about Romero as well because you see so many defenders today put their hands behind their backs,” the ex-Spurs player stated. “You cannot run properly with your hands behind your back; it is impossible.”
“When you see him, simply extend your hands and assume a balanced position. You can see his hands behind his back; that’s not good enough.”
Since the implementation of VAR in football, defenders have been more likely to place their hands behind their backs when attempting to stop shots.
Romero could have done better in the situation, especially because the £42 million defender was in an excellent position to react.
Nonetheless, it took Spurs only 15 minutes to tie the score at Old Trafford, thanks to Richarlison’s excellent header.
Tottenham dominated for long stretches of the game before being caught off guard in the 40th minute.
Marcus Rashford combined effectively with Hojlund before slotting the ball into the bottom corner to beat Vicario.
Spurs answered immediately after halftime, with Timo Werner sending up Rodrigo Bentancur following a superbly executed move.
