Nottingham Forest captain Ryan Yates has revealed what referee Paul Tierney told him during the contentious end to the match against Liverpool. The referee has found himself in the midst of an unexpected commotion.

Darwin Núñez scored in the 99th minute to give the Reds a crucial three points at the City Ground after they were expected to lose two. But the manner in which it arrived infuriated Forest.

Just seconds before, play was paused for a head injury to Ibrahima Konaté, and Liverpool received the ball back when the game resumed, despite Forest having control. Following the game, Forest‘s coaching staff, fans, and even the club’s owner were outraged by the incident.

Yates has now revealed what Tierney told him after the encounter. “The referee told me, ‘That’s the rule; they get the ball.’ “I honestly don’t understand how that is possible,” he told the Mirror.

Yates might want to know why, according to his own account, Forest’switched off’ following the encounter with Konaté. The game was far from finished at that moment, and any team fighting at the wrong end of the table should fight to the conclusion.

This incident has received a lot of attention, and it has been completely blown out of proportion. After all, the same thing happened earlier in the game when a Forest player went down in the penalty area, just as Liverpool attempted to regain possession of the ball. What player was it? Yes, you guessed it, Yates. He wasn’t questioning Tierney back then.
