The Liverpool debate
The aftermath from Saturday’s 1-0 setback at the City Ground shows no signs of easing. Many analysts and former officials have already weighed in on referee Paul Tierney’s blunder in the final minutes.
Forest were furious because they did not receive the ball back despite having possession when play was halted for a possible head injury to Ibrahima Konate. Instead, Tierney restarted the game with the ball at Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher’s feet, and Jurgen Klopp‘s team scored the winning goal from a corner less than two minutes later.
The hosts also believed they had a penalty for a challenge on Andrew Omobamidele during the play that resulted in Tierney’s verdict. But Reds midfielder Ryan Yates says he doesn’t blame Kelleher for not returning the ball to the Reds.
“To be fair, if he’s been told it’s his ball, he’s entitled to keep it,” the Forest captain remarked. “If we were told it was our ball, I would just play on. You’d believe it had to do with the regulations, but we could have defended better and cleared our lines; otherwise, the goal would not have occurred and we’d have taken a point.”
