Former Manchester United target Fabian Ruiz is currently being heralded as Zinedine Zidane’s successor.
The PSG midfielder, who is now from Spain, scored twice as his team defeated Switzerland 4-1 in the Nations League even though they were reduced to 10 players for more than 70 minutes.
Ruiz’s performance was a continuation of his excellent play in Euro 2024, when he was crucial to Spain’s victory. The 28-year-old was reportedly being considered by United as a potential replacement for Frenkie de Jong back in the summer of 2022. But none of the players made it to Old Trafford.
De Jong is still with Barcelona, but Ruiz moved from Napoli to PSG. For a whopping £70 million, United decided to acquire Casemiro from Real Madrid, according to the Mirror.
His form collapsed at Old Trafford, leading to a change at the halftime of Liverpool’s 3-0 home thrashing, following a brilliant start that saw him secure a fourth-place finish and the Carabao Cup in his rookie season.
With the Turkish market open until Friday, September 13, there have been rumors that he would be switching loans to Galatasaray, but he has rejected the move.
Conversely, Ruiz, who was again under United’s notice this summer, has been improving and receiving praise and parallels to Zidane following a stunning double against Switzerland. After winning the World Cup and the Euros, the French hero is regarded as one of the greatest.
“To compare myself to Zidane is a big deal,” Ruiz said in a statement to the media. I constantly make an effort to give the squad my all and earn the coach’s trust back. I’m really proud to represent my nation. It’s the best thing ever.
“This is a huge triumph. Even if defense is not our finest characteristic, we were able to endure while defending. Even when we’re down a man, it’s hard to score against us when we’re united. We’ve got to believe in ourselves.”
