Oliver Betschart got off to a strong start in the Junior Orange Bowl International Championship on Friday at the Biltmore Golf Course in Coral Gables, Florida.
The 16-year-old amateur shot a stunning two-under 69 in the first round, with three birdies and one bogey.
“It was a solid first round,” Betschart told the Royal Gazette.
One of Bermudian teenager’s birdies came on the course’s most difficult hole.
“One of the highlights was making birdie on the toughest hole, the 490-yard, par-4 17th, which was playing into the wind today,” Betschart recalled.
“I hit a driver, followed by a 6-iron to ten feet, and drained the putt. “The greens are rolling beautifully, which has boosted my confidence.”
Betschart will begin the second round on Saturday tied for ninth, three shots behind leader Samuel Gonzalez, who has a one-shot lead over the field.
“I’ve got an early start so I’m looking forward to keeping the momentum going,” he told me.
The promising player arrived in Florida in good form, having recently defended his Gosling’s Moongate Tour Championship title and won the Fecchio Cup for the first time last month.
