Andy Goldstein and Darren Bent have responded to proposals that Leeds United sack Daniel Farke, calling the calls “madness.”
Following their Boxing Day defeat to Preston, the Whites dropped to fourth in the Championship, eight points behind second-placed Ipswich Town and 14 behind table-toppers Leicester City after 24 games.
Following Leeds‘ defeat at Deepdale, some fans have called for Farke to be fired at Elland Road, with Carlos Corberan the preferred successor, but both Goldstein and Bent believe it would be “madness” to fire Farke.
“Quite a lot of Leeds fans have been calling, I don’t know why, for West Brom coach Carlos Corberan to be brought in and Daniel Farke to be sacked,” he said on talkSPORT (29 December, 16:40). “I think that’s insane; what do you think?”
“It’s a strange one that they want him because if you look at West Brom, their form is patchy as well,” Bent responded. They overcame Norwich in their most recent game, but they had previously lost to Middlesbrough and drawn with Stoke.
“They beat Rotherham but lost to Sunderland and Leicester.” It’s not like he’s uprooting trees. I like Carlos Corberan and think he’s a terrific manager, but that surprises me.”
Madness
Some Leeds United fans will be rightfully disappointed after the Whites’ Boxing Day defeat to Preston North End, but only a few days ago they were praising Farke for orchestrating the win over Ipswich Town.
The Championship is an extremely difficult division, and teams will constantly have spells of uneven form. Leeds’ recent defeat could not have come at a worse moment, but calls for Farke to be fired immediately are insane.
Such calls have only come from a small portion of the Leeds fanbase, but it is difficult to envisage Corberan being better qualified to lead this team to promotion than the man currently in charge at Elland Road.
Farke is a master at promoting teams to the Premier League, and while Leeds are now trailing the league leaders, there is still plenty of football to be played between now and the end of the Championship season.
Farke will get Leeds going again in time, and the defeat to Preston will be little more than a blip on the radar.
